Photographer Captures the Essence of Classic Architecture

Alixe Lay, a London-based photographer, specializes in interior photography and infusing them in her unique style.

Find the “Spirit of Place”

Lay is primarily an architecture and street photographer. Lay’s Instagram account showcases her signature style: moody, soulful images of buildings that look more like cabinets of curiosities filled with unique decor and objects.

Lay was always fascinated by photography. She started her official journey to photography when she received her first DLSR at age 15.

She tells PetaPixel, “It was at this time that Photoshop was introduced to me and I became obsessed with downloading action packs from Deviantart and using all the tools in Photoshop to color-grade my images.”

“Following 2017 I began to take photography seriously after I moved to Bath. My surroundings of some of the most beautiful examples of classical architecture around the globe has inspired much of my work. I have since been obsessed with photographing historic and design-focused interiors and architectures during my travels.

She began to feel that the mobile editing apps that she was using at the time were no longer useful as she improved her photography skills. Lay discovered Adobe Lightroom at that time and has used it as an integral part her creative process since.

It has changed the way I edit my images. It gave me the ability to see the fine details of the colors and tones, which helped me create the style I am known for today,” she says.

Lay describes her photography style using the term “genius loci,” or “the spirit and place” as a way to describe it.

Lay enjoys interiors and exteriors as well as looking for the extraordinary in everyday moments. “Like the sunray hitting the wall or how a curtain moves in the breeze,” Lay says.

Becoming a Lightroom Ambassador

Adobe’s 2022 Lightroom Ambassadors have been announced. Each ambassador has a different background and talent. Adobe’s program showcases their work and allows photographers to share their best practices and tips, especially for Photoshop and Lightroom post-processing.

Lay was invited to be a Lightroom Ambassador and plans to use the platform to share her “love of the poetics and space” and inspire others to look at their city and lives through a new lens. Lay can also share other aspects of her editing and shooting process through the program.

She says, “I was and am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside the hero of mine creative journey.” “I am also very excited to help others get to know Lightroom and inspire them to start or assist with their photography journey.”

Lay is looking ahead to the future and wants to use new methods to photograph historic and design-focused interiors.

“I look forward to discovering and incorporating new ways of photographing historical and design-focused interiors. I would love to tell stories about forgotten places and use my photography to highlight architects, designers, craftsmen and other people who work behind the scenes to preserve and honour the stories of our cultural heritage.
